DMARSPA APRIL 27, 2023, MINUTES 

1. President Marla Carr welcomed DMARSPA members, guests and scholarship winners to  the April 27, 2023, meeting. 

2. Marla introduced Megan Renkel who is the Downtown Farmer’s Market Manager at the  Greater Des Moines Partnership. A little over 200 farmer’s markets exist in Iowa. Des  Moines is in its 37th year, 1976 was the first. The winter market was started in 2006. We  are ranked number two of the farmers’ markets. In 1976, there were 15 vendors. Today  there are nearly 300 vendors, with 25,000 visitors, covering nine city blocks and vendors  from 55 counties in Iowa. A 2009 study done by Iowa State estimated that Iowa Farmers’  markets generated about 71 million dollars. Covid saw a drive thru market. Big following  of 45,000 people. Ranked #2 of the 101 Best Farmers’ Markets in America by the Daly  Meal. New vendors have to be approved by a new vendors jury made up of community  members. They try to have a variety of vendors . Last year they supported 29 vendors  that went through Spark DSM Minority Business Incubator to have more equality. Unity  point Health is the supporter of the market. Entertainment is also provided by seven  different entertainers every week. Saturday Salutes enables non profits to be recognized.  Market extras provide crafts, mascots, celebrity bell ringers, etc. Bike Valet will watch your  bikes while you shop. Meals From The Market was a program launched in 2009. They  partnered with DMARC and food that doesn’t seem is given to Food Banks throughout  Iowa. SNAP is accepted by all eligible vendor at The Market. Winter Farmers’ Market  started about 10 years ago in various places. Usually have these over one weekend. For a  vendor there is a $60 application fee, plus, $65 per day, per booth. Applications are started  to be taken in January for the following summer. On their web site, vendors are listed. DM  Farmers’ Market also is on FaceBook . 

3. April birthdays were recognized followed by Allegiance to the Flag and a moment of  silence.

SCHOLARSHIP ACCOUNT: Balance on Hand March 23, 2023 -     $3203.41, Deposit - $146.00, Interest - $.66. Balance on Hand, April 27, 2023 -      $3350.07. TOTAL BALANCE ON HAND - April 27, 2023 - $9016.45. 

C. Courtesy Report: Dee Fleischacker - Thank you note for generous donation for     scholarships and three letters to scholarship recipients.  

C. OLD BUSINESS: 

    1. Don’t forget dues - $18 

    2. IRSPA district meeting - May 3. People could ride with Marla.     3. Marla encouraged people to volunteer to decorate tables.     4. Still need to fill position of President Elect. 

D. NEW BUSINESS: 

    1. Marla read a thank you note from “Mary’s Helping Hands.”     2. Thank you to Jan Johnson for volunteering to be President next year.     3. Any ideas for programs, please fill out and get to Marla by end of April.     4. Officers approved by member vote. 

    5. Installation will be in August. 

    6. Bill Synder will find the brochures for DMARSPA to pass out to interested         people. They will serve over 57,000 people this year. Information was given for        volunteer opportunities and tours of their new facility on Army Post Road. 

7. Dee introduced the Scholarship winner Jordyn Foelske, a Simpson student from Waverly,  Iowa. She has a passion for teaching, being creative, positive, flexible and a good leader.  Jordyn 

 is a soon to be junior and is studying Elementary education in the upper grades. She would  like to be a person students can go to for advice. Currently, she is working at the before/after  child care and will be making summer and all day camps for 4 H and for the county fair. 8. Dawn Hutchison told of a program, “Broadway Bound,” presented by Heartland Singers  Community Chorus at the Oakwood United Methodist Church April 30, at 3 pm. 7. Representatives from DMARC thanked members for the $710.00 donation, which will  provide meals for 800 people.

9. Door prize - Elaine Pauly.` 

May program is Iowa Juneteenth - Dwana Bradley.
