DMARSPA July 28, 2016
President Justine welcomed approximately 90 members,
visitors and guests to the July 28 meeting. Justine introduced the speakers for
Friendship Force- Marla Carr, Jeanette House, Alice Rasmussen and Shelley Bain.
Friendship Force is an organization that encourages traveling and hosting both
internationally and nationwide. The average stay is 7-10 days with a host
family that you have hosted. The membership fee is $30.00. $10.00 of that goes
to the national unit for local hosting. Expenses for outbound exchanges include
your air fare, $10 per day to the national unit, costs for admissions and
restaurant meals, and other personal expenditures. The spoken language both
nationally and internationally is English.
In countries where the English language is a challenge, translators are
provided. It is possible to be a member, even if you don’t care to travel.
Marla concluded her presentation with these thoughts: 1. We build bridges through
friendship. 2. A world of friends is a world of peace. 3. Be more of a traveler,
not a spectator. 4. Be informed-don’t be afraid.
The group recited the pledge and paused for a moment of
silence. Justine thanked the wait staff -Nick, Stephanie, Claudia, Jordan and
Anthony. Shirley Corkhill told a joke. Justine called the meeting to order. The
secretary’s minutes were read by Shirley.
Treasurer Rosemary Hillman gave the treasurer’s report. Rosemary asked
for someone in the group to volunteer to replace her as treasurer. It was
reported that Anne Driscoll broke her foot.
Legislation- Gary Thelen did not have a report at this time.
Directories- Joelle and Bill Snyder were recognized for their efforts in
formatting and distributing the membership books. There are 212 members.
IRSPA President-Elect Chris Campidilli encouraged members to
submit their state dues by October 1. She also mentioned the state meeting will
be held in Marshalltown Oct.5-6.
Justine collected the
volunteer hours. These will be sent to the state office.
Guests were Mary Alice Baker and Kathy Erickson. Marla gave
the answer to the table puzzle.
The August 25th speaker will be Doug Wilson speaking
about “The History of Coal Mining in Iowa.” The installation of officers will
also take place.
Respectfully submitted.
Joelle Snyder
