DMARSPA MARCH 22, 2018, MINUTES
I. President Paula Schaffer welcomed members and guests to the DMARSPA meeting.
II. David Livingston of AARP was the featured speaker, sharing the topic of “Preparing Your
Home as You Age.”
A. Chairlifts can also work. Bathrooms can also be modified. Make sure grab bars are
properly installed. Can replace tub with cutout model. Install a one- piece shower stall.
Safety devices can also be used. Use a comfort height toilet, accessible height sink.
B. In the kitchen, a person could have a pull- out counter top, easy to use pulls and
handles, countertop microwave, oven rack puller.
C. Find creative solutions.
D. Laundry - move it up to main living level. Get stack washer and dryer in closet.
E. Think of where you could do your favorite hobbies.
F. Electrical outlets and switches - raise in areas of most use or switch type.
G. Make sure lighting is adequate. EX: Inexpensive night lights.
H. Windows - temperature control and emergencies.
I. Make sure you have some form of communication with you.
J. Consult experts who can help you stay in your home.
K. Other things: set hot water heater to 120 degrees; place an all-purpose fire
extinguisher where you can reach it.
L. Members can refer to the packet each received . A person could also go to the AARP
web site for the hand book and additional resources.
III. Justine Finley honored March birthdays with members singing Happy Birthday, followed by
the Pledge to the Flag and a moment of silence.
IV. Lunch
V. Justine talked about the benefits of joining AARP.
VI. Marilyn Reese - Joke of The Day.
VII. Business meeting called to order.
A. Secretary Minutes- Sherry Wilkinson. Minutes were approved as read.
B. Treasurer’s Report - Rosemary Hillman - checks have not been deposited yet from last
month . Balance on hand was $9,846.17. Scholarship fund is still the same. She is
accepting renewals of membership, although June is the deadline. Warren Pitcher
asked a question about the amount in the scholarship fund and whether the additional
monies for scholarships will be transferred from the general fund. Rosemary said yes.
C. Courtesy and Scholarship - Dee: Scholarship applications are coming in; the
committee will meet in April to score the applications. Tina Olson had knee surgery;
Thinking of you card to Vickie Waley. We did receive a new member today - Joanne
Reimer. One member thanked DMARSPA for sending her a card. It was greatly
appreciated.
D. Legislative - Gary Thelen: Absent.
E. OLD BUSINESS:
1. Continue to log your volunteer hours. They have to be sent to the state in August.
One member asked about the importance. The state turns the hours in, and it
reverts to dollars for non profit organizations to be used for grants.
2. Continue to alert Bill and Joelle of directory changes.
F. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Food Bank of Iowa featured in April will accept cash or check; no food items.
2. Nominating Committee - Please consider becoming an officer.
a. A vice president and head cashier are needed.
3. Program committee will meet at Noah’s in May. If you have a program idea, please
email or call Justine with the person’s name and contact information.
VII. Cashiers for April: Marilyn Reese and Sharon Cooley.
VIII. Announcements: Justine has four tickets to announce candidacy of Julie Haggerty to
give to someone.
IX. Introduction of guests:
X. Door prize won by Bill Snyder.
XI. The March 22, 2018, meeting was adjourned at 12:24 pm. The April 26th meeting will
feature Gary Thelen, “The Story Behind Cinco De Mayo.”
