DMARSPA Minutes - August 27, 2017
Forte Banquet Center - 10:30 a.m.
President Shirley Corkhill welcomed 120 people attending the DMARSPA meeting, with a special welcome to our newest members.
President - elect Justine Finley introduced Michael McCurnin, director of Water Prevention at Des Moines Water Works, who spoke on water quality in Iowa.Michael explained the organization of DM Water Works and how our water is prepared for consumption.  DM Water Works serves 500,000 customers, using three facilities to purify the ground or surface water.  In an average July day in 2012, customers used 46.5 million gallons;  In a peak day, 96 million gallons were used.  He also discussed the current Nitrate law suit pending in court.   Currently, agriculture surface water going into rivers in the DM lobe is not regulated, and permits are not required from farm lands or orchards.  DM Water Works believes this is a point source and a permit should be required.   They would like an interpretation.  Time was left for questions from the audience.
Justine led the Birthday song for August birthdays, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.
After lunch catered by Baratta's, President Shirley Corkhill thanked the wait staff for their service.
